You know a lot about a lot of different kinds of law. Which is your favorite and why?
My main legal areas are mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, and to a certain extent, project finance. I’ve been focusing on life sciences for the past four years. This is a very interesting field. Over the years, we’ve been able to build up a very good portfolio, and the biotech industry is a very progressive business for new companies. It’s very dynamic and creative, which I find very interesting, so it makes sense that I like working in this area. Most of the time, it’s hard because there are a lot of rules to follow and clients need help in unusual situations. But I’m always happy to find a way to help, no matter what the situation is.
What was the best thing you did in 2017, and how does that make you want to do better this year?
I’m one person who has three jobs: I started the firm, I’m a practitioner, so I try to be the best at what I do, and I’m the managing partner, which is the most difficult job for me. Managing all three jobs can be hard, so being named the European Managing Partner of the Year by The Lawyer European Awards was the best thing he did in 2017. I just think of myself as a girl from Eastern Europe, so this is a big deal for me.
I could never have imagined being recognized for my work, and I never thought I would get an award in that area. The most exciting, heartwarming, and energizing thing was that my team of lawyers submitted my place secretly behind my back and then gave me this award. This was something I couldn’t believe, and I really appreciate it. Without the help of my team and office, I wouldn’t be able to do anything. Again in 2017, there was an award for the legal market.
I was the first person to start a private law firm after independence. At the time, tanks were still in the streets and Russian groups were just starting to leave. We started the law firm in 1991, when things like private acquisitions and working with big companies like Coca-Cola and making room for their businesses were new to Lithuania. The time was very exciting.
But at that time, we didn’t have any laws about joint ventures or franchises, so with the help of my American colleagues, we were able to make a big difference in the growth of this market. The most important things I did in 2017 were getting two major awards for my work as a Managing Partner and the work I did after becoming independent.
